The Castillo San Felipe del Morro, commonly known as El Morro, is a fort built in San Juan, dating back to the 16th century, when Puerto Rico was under Spanish rule. When we first arrived at the site, I was overwhelmed by its size. I was reluctant to go on this hike as it sat on a hill and it was very hot. Once we got there, I wanted to feel what it was like being inside one of the garitas. These are the round sentry posts that run along the city walls of Old San Juan. Today, they are iconic with their long narrow openings while overlooking the sea but back then, they provided protection for guards who watched over the city.

It made sense to paint one of these garitas as they are so ingrained in my memory and in those who have visited this colossal structure. I remember running into one and being amazed at the breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean and sky as I listened to the sound of the waves crashing on the rocks below. I also remember imagining what it must have been like to stare up at the night sky from one of these posts back in 1595. I imagine they could see many stars and maybe even the Milky Way as the light pollution was so low. All this beauty the night before Sir Francis Drake and 25 ships attempted to invade El Viejo San Juan! I am grateful to have had the opportunity to visit El Morro. Without those memories, I wouldn't had come up with The Milky Way Over El Viejo San Juan. Cannot wait to go back!

This mug version is so trippy because the image has been mirrored and if you look long enough, it begins to look a lot more abstract. This version of The Milky Way Over El Viejo San Juan is by far my favorite!
